Brazil is the largest radio market in South America and its stations are dominated by domestic music to a degree that makes them genuinely different listening. Sertanejo, the Brazilian country genre, is the single biggest format by audience. Samba, pagode, forro, axe, MPB and Brazilian funk all have substantial radio presence, and bossa nova, the one Brazilian genre most international listeners know, is a comparatively small part of the domestic picture.
Brazilian radio also retains a large number of genuinely local AM and FM stations in cities well outside the Rio and Sao Paulo axis, carrying regional music and local news. Several in this directory broadcast from the north-east, which has its own musical traditions and its own accent.
