Canadian broadcasters operate under Canadian content requirements, which mandate a minimum share of Canadian music on commercial radio. As with the French quota system, this has a real and audible effect: Canadian stations play a domestic repertoire that gets little airplay south of the border.
The country is officially bilingual and its radio reflects that. Quebec has a substantial French-language broadcasting sector with its own stars and charts, entirely separate from both English Canada and France.
Canada is also home to several large internet-only radio operations that run dozens or hundreds of themed channels rather than a single service. A number of the classical and specialist channels in this directory come from that model, which is why you will see families of near-identical listings differing only by genre or composer.
